The city of Chaucer and pilgrims invites you on a new creative journey — Bob Ross painting classes minutes from Canterbury.
Canterbury is one of England's most historically significant cities, dominated by the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has drawn pilgrims since the martyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170. The medieval city walls still encircle much of the centre, where timber-framed buildings lean over narrow lanes and the River Stour winds past ancient churches and gardens. Three universities give the city a vibrant, youthful energy, filling independent cafes, bookshops, and bars along the high street. Beyond the cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church complete the World Heritage Site, representing over 1,400 years of continuous Christian worship. The Marlowe Theatre anchors a strong performing arts scene, while the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge combines a museum, library, and gallery in one grand Victorian building. Westgate Towers, the largest surviving medieval gateway in England, stands guard where Chaucer's pilgrims would have entered the city.
Canterbury's artistic heritage stretches back to the medieval manuscript illuminators who worked in the cathedral scriptorium. Thomas Sidney Cooper, the Victorian animal painter, was born here and established the Sidney Cooper Gallery which still operates as an exhibition space on the high street. The city's three universities sustain a thriving contemporary arts scene, with the University for the Creative Arts at Canterbury producing graduates who exhibit internationally. The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge holds significant collections including works by local artists spanning several centuries. The King's Mile area hosts independent galleries, while the annual Canterbury Festival brings visual arts, literature, and music together each autumn in one of England's oldest cultural celebrations.
Living in a city steeped in eight centuries of artistic tradition, Canterbury residents understand the power of creative expression. Yet the city's student-oriented cultural scene can sometimes feel inaccessible to those seeking a relaxed, structured introduction to painting. A Bob Ross class at our nearby Whitstable studio strips away pretension entirely — there are no grades, no critiques, just the genuine thrill of watching a landscape emerge from your own brush strokes. Just twelve minutes by train from Canterbury West, it is one of the easiest creative day trips imaginable, and the seaside setting provides a refreshing counterpoint to the city's ancient stone streets.

The landscape around Canterbury has inspired artists for centuries, from the medieval illustrators who documented the pilgrimage route to the watercolourists who captured the Cathedral rising above the River Stour's water meadows. In our Bob Ross painting classes you will learn to recreate this kind of pastoral English scenery using the wet-on-wet technique — a method that produces soft, blended landscapes with remarkable depth and atmosphere. You will build skies that glow with the quality of light typical of the Kent coast, add distant treelines using a fan brush loaded with sap green and umber, and work foreground grasses and reflective water using the liner brush and palette knife. The ancient character of the Canterbury area — its sense of layers of history embedded in a living landscape — translates beautifully into oil paint, and participants often produce scenes that feel genuinely timeless on their first attempt.
Distance: Approximately 7 miles • Drive time: 15-20 minutes
Canterbury to Whitstable is one of the shortest and simplest journeys to our studio. By car, take the A2990 Whitstable Road heading north from Canterbury — it is a single road that runs directly between the two towns, taking around 15 minutes. By train, Canterbury West station offers direct services to Whitstable every half hour, with the journey lasting just 12 minutes. Canterbury East station also connects, though you may need to change. The Seasalter Christian Centre sits on Faversham Road on the eastern approach to Whitstable, so drivers from Canterbury will find it on their left shortly before reaching the town centre. This proximity makes Canterbury the closest major town to our painting studio.
