Bob Ross Oil Painting Classes Near Faversham

Swap the hop gardens and creek-side charm of Faversham for a day of mountains, forests, and happy little clouds.

About Faversham

Faversham is one of those rare English towns that has kept its medieval bones intact while remaining a vibrant, living community rather than a museum piece. Over 475 listed buildings line streets that radiate from the ancient market square, where a market has been held continuously since the town received its charter in 1252. The creek — once a bustling commercial waterway packed with Thames sailing barges loading gunpowder, bricks, and hops — now provides a tranquil setting for restored barges, a thriving boatyard, and weekend walks among the reed beds. Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest brewer, has been operating from the town centre since 1698, and the warm, malty scent of brewing drifts through the streets on still mornings. Faversham's position between the orchards of the Kent fruit belt and the marshlands of the Swale Estuary gives it a distinctive character — half agricultural market town, half coastal settlement. Arden's House on Abbey Street is associated with one of English literature's earliest domestic murder dramas, immortalised in the Elizabethan play Arden of Faversham. The surrounding countryside includes the ancient Blean Woods, the Chart Gunpowder Mills — where explosives were manufactured for 400 years — and the peaceful village of Oare with its creekside nature reserve.

Art and Culture in Faversham

Faversham's visual richness makes it a natural subject for artists. The jumble of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian architecture along Abbey Street and Court Street provides the kind of varied, textured streetscape that painters relish — crooked rooflines, weathered timber, handmade bricks in a dozen shades of red and ochre. The creek has been painted and photographed countless times, its mix of working boats, reed beds, and big estuary skies offering compositions that change with every tide. The Fleur de Lis Heritage Centre hosts local art exhibitions alongside its historical displays, and the town's annual Open Houses event sees dozens of residents opening their doors to display artwork in domestic settings — a reflection of how deeply creativity is embedded in the community. Local artists work from studios in converted oast houses and agricultural buildings in the surrounding countryside, drawing inspiration from the hop gardens, orchards, and marshes. The Alexander Centre provides performance and exhibition space, and independent galleries on the high street showcase Kent-based painters and craftspeople year-round.

Why Faversham Residents Love Oil Painting

Faversham is a town that rewards a slow pace and an observant eye. Living here, you already appreciate the beauty in weathered timber, the play of light on creek water, and the shifting colours of the marshes through the seasons. A Bob Ross painting class takes that quiet awareness and channels it into something extraordinary — a finished oil painting, created in a single day, that captures the kind of landscape beauty you admire every time you walk along the creek or through the orchards. At just 10 minutes by train or 12 minutes by car, our Whitstable studio is closer to Faversham than most supermarkets. You could genuinely decide on Saturday morning to learn oil painting and be home by late afternoon with a completed canvas. No other creative experience offers that kind of immediacy and satisfaction.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have some painting experience, Mark’s classes are designed to be relaxing, fun, and rewarding. You’ll go home with a finished oil painting you can be proud of. View upcoming class dates or try an online tutorial from the comfort of home.

Painting the Creek Country: Landscapes Around Faversham in Oil

Faversham sits among some of the most atmospheric landscape in North Kent — the tidal creek winding through reed beds and mudflats, the Swale Nature Reserve and its enormous skies, the orchard country of the Fruit Belt stretching south toward the Downs, and the distinctive silhouette of the Shepherd Neame brewery chimney against the town skyline. These are the kinds of landscapes that reward the loose, expressive approach of the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique. In class you will learn to paint the quality of light typical of the Faversham area — the way it falls flat and silver over the marshes on winter mornings, or blazes orange along the creek at evening. You will build up reed beds using the fan brush, suggest distant water using horizontal strokes of blue-grey, and bring in the soft sky that makes the Swale marshes feel so exposed and elemental. The painting you take home will feel true to the landscape you know.
