From Brighton's vibrant seafront to the tranquil art of oil painting, discover your creative side with a Bob Ross class.
Brighton is one of England's most iconic seaside cities, renowned for its bohemian character and creative energy. The Royal Pavilion, an extravagant Indo-Saracenic palace built for George IV, stands as the city's architectural centrepiece. The Victorian Palace Pier stretches out into the English Channel, while the narrow lanes of the North Laine quarter bustle with independent shops, cafes, and galleries. Brighton's pebble beach and promenade draw millions of visitors each year, and the city hosts one of the largest arts festivals in the country. The South Downs National Park rises behind the city, offering chalk grassland walks with sweeping views toward the sea. With two universities and a thriving cultural scene, Brighton has long attracted artists, musicians, and writers seeking inspiration in its open-minded atmosphere.
Brighton has been a magnet for artists since the Regency period, when the Prince Regent's patronage attracted painters and architects to the town. The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery houses a significant collection of fine art and decorative pieces spanning several centuries. The city's annual Brighton Festival and Fringe together form one of the largest arts gatherings in Europe, showcasing visual art alongside theatre and music. Contemporary galleries such as Fabrica and the Phoenix Brighton provide exhibition space for emerging and established artists. Street art adorns buildings across the North Laine and Kemptown, making the city itself a living gallery.
Brighton residents are naturally drawn to creative pursuits, and the city's artistic atmosphere makes oil painting a perfect extension of that spirit. A Bob Ross painting class offers a structured yet relaxing contrast to Brighton's fast-paced cultural scene. Many participants from Brighton appreciate the meditative quality of the wet-on-wet technique, finding it a welcome change from their busy urban lives. The landscapes created in class often echo the rolling South Downs and dramatic coastline that Brighton residents see daily, giving the experience a personal connection to home.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have some painting experience, Mark’s classes are designed to be relaxing, fun, and rewarding. You’ll go home with a finished oil painting you can be proud of. View upcoming class dates or try an online tutorial from the comfort of home.
Brighton's setting — the South Downs rising steeply behind the city, the English Channel spreading to the horizon, the white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters visible to the east — provides some of the most dramatic coastal landscape in southern England. The Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique is beautifully suited to coastal and downland scenes: the blended technique captures the quality of sea light, the chalk white of cliff faces, and the soft green and ochre of downland turf with a naturalness that other methods struggle to match. In class you will learn to paint the kind of seascape that connects directly to the Sussex coast — building up a dramatic sky with cloud formations in Titanium White and Phthalo Blue, establishing a sea that moves between turquoise and deep blue-grey, and bringing in cliff faces and distant headlands with bold palette knife strokes. The rolling chalk downs that Brighton residents see every day behind the city translate particularly well into the horizontal layering approach of the wet-on-wet method.
