About Eastbourne

Eastbourne sits at the foot of the South Downs where the chalk hills meet the sea in spectacular fashion at Beachy Head, the highest chalk cliff in Britain. The town developed as a planned Victorian resort under the guidance of the Duke of Devonshire, and its elegant seafront architecture reflects that era of careful design. The bandstand on the promenade is one of the most photographed structures on the south coast, and the Carpet Gardens maintain their Edwardian splendour throughout the seasons. The Sovereign Harbour marina is one of the largest in Europe, while the old town of Eastbourne retains its village character with flint-walled cottages and a Norman church. Birling Gap, just west of town, provides access to the Seven Sisters cliffs, a stretch of undulating chalk coastline that has featured in countless films and paintings.

Art and Culture in Eastbourne

Eastbourne's connection to the arts centres on the Towner Art Gallery, an award-winning contemporary gallery that holds a nationally significant collection of modern British art, including works by Eric Ravilious who painted the South Downs landscape extensively in the 1930s. Ravilious captured the chalk hills, lighthouses, and farmland around Eastbourne with a distinctive watercolour style that remains influential today. The gallery regularly hosts exhibitions celebrating landscape painting traditions. Local art societies have thrived here since the Victorian era, and the Devonshire Park Theatre provides a cultural anchor for the performing arts in the town.

Why Eastbourne Residents Love Oil Painting

Eastbourne's residents live surrounded by some of England's most paintable scenery, from the white cliffs to the rolling downland. A Bob Ross oil painting class allows people from Eastbourne to translate the landscapes they walk through into artwork they can hang on their walls. The wet-on-wet technique is particularly suited to capturing the soft light and atmospheric skies that characterise the Sussex coast. Many attendees from Eastbourne comment that the class reconnects them with the natural beauty they sometimes take for granted, offering a fresh perspective on familiar views through the medium of oil paint.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have some painting experience, Mark’s classes are designed to be relaxing, fun, and rewarding. You’ll go home with a finished oil painting you can be proud of. View upcoming class dates or try an online tutorial from the comfort of home.

Painting Beachy Head and the Sussex Cliffs: Oil Seascapes from Eastbourne

Eastbourne occupies one of the most dramatic coastal positions in southern England, with Beachy Head's 530-foot chalk cliffs rising just to the west of the town. The views from the clifftop — the lighthouse below, the English Channel stretching to France, the Seven Sisters rolling east toward Seaford — are among the finest on the English coast. These are subjects ideally suited to the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique, which handles dramatic skies and the specific quality of chalk cliff painting with particular success. In class you will learn the palette knife technique for painting chalk cliff faces — the clean, confident strokes that suggest the solidity and height of the white rock — alongside the sky and sea techniques that set them off. The characteristic quality of Sussex light, that bright clarity that comes from the chalk geology and the proximity of the sea, gives Eastbourne residents an instinctive feel for the tonal values needed to paint coastal landscape convincingly.
