About Lewes

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, perched on a hillside above the River Ouse where it cuts through the South Downs. The town is crowned by the ruins of a Norman castle and retains a remarkable collection of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian architecture along its steep, winding streets. Lewes is perhaps best known for its spectacular Bonfire Night celebrations on November 5th, the largest and most dramatic in the country, with torchlit processions through the ancient streets. The town played a significant role in English history as the site of the 1264 Battle of Lewes, where Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III. Harvey's Brewery, established in 1790, still operates from its riverside premises. Independent bookshops, antique dealers, and artisan food shops give Lewes a distinctly cultured and self-sufficient character.

Art and Culture in Lewes

Lewes has long attracted creative minds, and its artistic heritage is woven into the fabric of the town. The Bloomsbury Group had strong connections to the area, with Virginia Woolf's home at Monk's House in nearby Rodmell and the Charleston Farmhouse — decorated by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant — just a few miles away in Firle. These sites remain important cultural destinations celebrating early twentieth-century art and design. The town itself supports numerous galleries and artist studios, including the Star Brewery complex which houses working studios. The annual Artwave Festival opens private studios across Lewes and the surrounding area each summer.

Why Lewes Residents Love Oil Painting

Lewes residents tend to value craftsmanship, heritage, and hands-on creativity, making a Bob Ross painting class a natural fit. The town's strong tradition of independent thinking and artistic appreciation means many people here are already curious about trying new creative outlets. Oil painting using the Bob Ross method offers an accessible entry point that delivers impressive results within a single day. The South Downs landscapes that surround Lewes — chalk hills, river valleys, and ancient woodland — are exactly the kind of scenery that translates beautifully onto canvas using the wet-on-wet technique.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have some painting experience, Mark’s classes are designed to be relaxing, fun, and rewarding. You’ll go home with a finished oil painting you can be proud of. View upcoming class dates or try an online tutorial from the comfort of home.

Painting the Ouse Valley: Oil Landscapes Inspired by Lewes

Lewes sits where the River Ouse cuts through the South Downs, creating one of the most dramatic valley landscapes in Sussex — the river meadows below the castle mount, the chalk escarpments rising on either side, and the wide views south toward Newhaven and the sea. This is landscape of strong form and subtle colour: the particular greyish-green of chalk downland turf, the silver quality of the Ouse in winter, and the warm stone of the castle against a clearing sky. The Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique handles this kind of distinctive landscape with particular success, building up the broad chalk forms with the palette knife and establishing the valley's atmospheric depth through the layered blending the wet canvas allows. In class you will learn to paint the wide, sweeping quality of downland scenery — the sense of open sky over an ancient valley that Lewes residents experience walking up School Hill toward the castle. The rolling contours of the Downs are among the most satisfying shapes to paint using the Bob Ross method.
