Essex painters of all abilities are discovering the joy of oil painting at our Whitstable studio.
Essex is a county of remarkable contrasts, stretching from the urban edge of London in the west to the wild marshlands and ancient woodlands of the east. Its coastline runs from the Thames Estuary around to the Stour, taking in the atmospheric estuaries of the Crouch, Blackwater, and Colne that have inspired generations of painters and writers. Inland, the county offers rolling farmland, historic market towns like Saffron Walden and Thaxted, and the university city of Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town. Essex's modern identity encompasses the energy of towns like Basildon, Chelmsford, and Harlow alongside the gentler pace of villages in the Dengie Peninsula and Uttlesford district. The county's proximity to London has always shaped its character, providing a green buffer of countryside and coast that residents treasure. From Epping Forest in the west to the sailing waters of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex rewards exploration.
Essex has a painting heritage that stretches back to John Constable, who was born just across the border in Suffolk but found many of his subjects along the Essex side of the Stour Valley. The Dedham Vale landscape, shared between the two counties, remains one of England's most celebrated painting grounds. The Thames Estuary coast has its own distinct artistic tradition, with the atmospheric marshlands and wide skies attracting watercolourists and oil painters for centuries. Today, Essex supports a network of art societies, open studio events, and galleries from the Firstsite contemporary art gallery in Colchester to the independent spaces lining Leigh-on-Sea's Broadway.
Essex residents appreciate experiences that offer genuine value and a break from routine, which is exactly what a Bob Ross painting day delivers. Whether you are from the busy commuter towns in the west or the quieter coastal communities in the east, spending a full day learning to paint with Mark Terrell offers something entirely different from everyday life. The Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique is designed for complete beginners, meaning no prior experience is needed. You will leave the Whitstable studio with a completed oil painting, new skills, and the confidence to continue painting at home.

Essex rewards the landscape painter with a range of scenery both wider and more dramatic than its reputation suggests — the Thames and Blackwater estuaries with their vast tidal skies, the Dedham Vale of Constable country in the north, the ancient Forest of Epping, and the North Sea coast from Southend to Mersea Island. These are landscapes of light, water, and enormous sky — exactly the conditions the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique was designed to capture. The method's ability to build atmospheric, luminous sky quickly and convincingly makes it ideally suited to the flat-horizon views that characterise much of Essex landscape, where the sky can easily occupy two-thirds of the composition. In class you will learn to paint sweeping estuarine views, soft rural countryside, and coastal scenes using the full repertoire of Bob Ross brush techniques — from the two-inch sky brush to the palette knife foreground work that brings a landscape to life in the final stages of painting.
