Let Richmond's famous riverside beauty inspire your journey into oil painting at our coastal studio.
Richmond upon Thames is widely considered one of London's most beautiful boroughs, blessed with the magnificent 2,500-acre Richmond Park where red and fallow deer roam freely, and the Thames curves through a landscape that has inspired poets, painters, and monarchs for centuries. The view from Richmond Hill is the only view in England protected by an Act of Parliament, looking out across the Thames Valley towards the Surrey hills. The town centre retains an elegant village character with Georgian architecture, independent shops, and riverside pubs. Hampton Court Palace lies within the borough, as do the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing the world's largest collection of living plants. Twickenham, home of English rugby, and the gracious suburb of Teddington add further character to a borough that manages to feel like countryside while remaining firmly within London.
Richmond's landscape has been painted by some of the greatest names in British art. J.M.W. Turner lived in Twickenham and returned repeatedly to the Thames at Richmond, capturing its light in oils and watercolours that remain among his most beloved works. Sir Joshua Reynolds lived on Richmond Hill, and the protected view from the hilltop has been the subject of countless paintings across three centuries. The borough supports a flourishing contemporary art scene, with the Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham hosting exhibitions in a stunning riverside Baroque setting. Richmond Art Society and numerous local groups provide regular opportunities for residents to paint and exhibit, continuing a tradition of artistic engagement that is deeply embedded in the area's identity.
Richmond residents are surrounded by some of the most paintable scenery in London, from deer grazing in the park to sunlight sparkling on the Thames, so the appeal of learning to capture landscapes on canvas feels instinctive here. The Bob Ross method is ideal for those who have admired beautiful views all their lives but never imagined they could recreate that feeling in paint. A day at the Whitstable studio offers Richmond visitors the chance to develop real painting skills in a supportive environment, taking home a finished oil painting that marks the beginning of a rewarding new pastime.

Richmond commands some of the finest riverside and parkland scenery in the London area — the Thames sweeping below the hill in a great meander, Richmond Park's ancient deer-grazed landscape with its long views, and the series of painted vistas from Richmond Hill that have attracted artists from Reynolds and Turner to the present day. The view from Richmond Hill is in fact the only view in England protected by an Act of Parliament on aesthetic grounds — an extraordinary tribute to its painterly quality. In class you will learn to paint the kind of river and parkland scene characteristic of the Richmond area using the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique. The distinctive quality of the Thames at Richmond — the way the river reflects the trees on both banks, the movement of water around the bridge piers, and the soft downland quality of the hills behind — translates beautifully into the blended, atmospheric approach of the wet-on-wet method. Participants from Richmond often describe the painting experience as a new way of seeing a landscape they have looked at for years.
