Trade the world's longest pleasure pier for a paintbrush and capture breathtaking landscapes on canvas.
Southend-on-Sea is Essex's premier seaside resort, celebrated for its record-breaking 1.34-mile pier stretching out into the Thames Estuary and its seven miles of sandy and shingle beaches. The town earned city status in 2022 and has been reinventing itself as a cultural destination, with the Focal Point Gallery championing contemporary art and the Royal Pavilion hosting events year-round on the seafront. The old town of Leigh-on-Sea, nestled at the western end, is a charming fishing village with cockle sheds, independent galleries, and a bohemian atmosphere that has attracted artists and writers for decades. Adventure Island amusement park, the Cliffs Pavilion theatre, and the Kursaal entertainment venue ensure there is always something happening. The estuary views from Southend's shoreline, with the Kent coast visible across the water, are among the most dramatic in the south-east.
Southend and neighbouring Leigh-on-Sea have developed one of the most vibrant art scenes in Essex. Leigh's Broadway is lined with independent galleries and artist studios, and the annual Leigh Art Trail opens dozens of private spaces to the public each summer. The Beecroft Art Gallery in Southend holds an important collection of works spanning several centuries, with particular strength in maritime and estuary painting. The unique quality of light over the Thames Estuary has drawn painters since Constable's time, and this tradition continues today with a thriving community of plein air artists working along the foreshore. The Focal Point Gallery in the Victoria Shopping Centre is one of the region's leading spaces for contemporary art.
Southend residents live with the sea on their doorstep and understand instinctively the pull of natural beauty, which makes landscape painting a natural extension of that coastal sensibility. Many visitors from Southend find that the Bob Ross technique of building a painting layer by layer feels surprisingly intuitive, perhaps because they are accustomed to watching the constantly shifting light and colour over the estuary. Attending a class across the water in Whitstable adds a pleasing symmetry to the day, swapping one stretch of Kent coastline for another while learning a completely new skill.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have some painting experience, Mark’s classes are designed to be relaxing, fun, and rewarding. You’ll go home with a finished oil painting you can be proud of. View upcoming class dates or try an online tutorial from the comfort of home.
Southend-on-Sea commands one of the most expansive views on the English coast — the Thames estuary spreading from shore to horizon, Canvey Island low in the middle distance, the Kent coast just visible across the water on a clear day, and the world's longest pier stretching into the grey-green tide. This is estuary landscape at its most elemental: enormous sky, flat water, and distant shore, with the quality of light that comes from being at the point where a great river meets the open sea. In class you will learn to paint exactly this kind of wide, atmospheric, sky-dominated composition using the Bob Ross wet-on-wet technique. The method is ideally suited to the tonal complexity of estuary light — the way silver and blue and grey interact at the horizon, the movement of clouds above open water, and the subtle reflections on a tidal surface. Participants from Southend regularly produce paintings that capture the character of the estuary with a directness and confidence that surprises them.
Distance: Approximately 60 miles • Drive time: 1h 10m
From Southend, follow the A13 westbound past Basildon towards the M25. Join the M25 clockwise at junction 30 and cross the Dartford Crossing into Kent. Continue on the M25 to junction 2, then take the A2 eastbound towards Canterbury. The road becomes the M2, which you follow to junction 7 before picking up the A299 Thanet Way directly to Whitstable. Exit the A299 at the Whitstable signs and the Seasalter Christian Centre is on Faversham Road. The total distance is around 60 miles, but allow at least 1 hour 10 minutes as the Dartford Crossing can experience queues, particularly on weekend mornings.
